we saw the lloyd benson/dan quayle smack down but that's not the only moment we've seen in the vice presidential debates. >> it's not. if you look back at the history of these, they only started in 1976, you can see some of the object lessons for both of those candidates. let's talk about 1976 bob dole and walter mondale, the classic example neither side wants to commit, a self-inflicted error of a very large proportion. >> added up the killed and wounded, democrat wars in this century will be about 1.6 million americans enough to fill the city of detroit. >> senator dole has richly earned his reputation as a hatchet man by implying and stating that world war ii and the korean war were democratic wars. >> now for paul ryan, he's got to worry as a younger candidate against inadvertently walking into a buzz saw against a more experienced opponent the way dan quayle walked into this line from lloyd benson. take a listen. >> i have as much experience in the congress as jack kennedy did when he sought the presidency. i will be prepared to deal with the people in the bush administration if that unfort

we saw it with lloyd benson and dan quayle in 1988. it appeared that lloyd benson got the better of that, but of course george bush and dan quayle won the election. i talked to dan quayle yesterday -- or a few days ago, rather, he said he thinks he helped george h.w. bush in that race, even though he got smacked down with that "you're no jack kennedy" line, because he took the fight to michael dukakis and that's the bottom line that you hear from people who have been through these debates, is that the key for vice presidential candidates, guys, is for them to focus their fire not on the counter pa counterpart standing across the stage from them but rather, on the top of the other ticket. you can expect joe biden's going to be very aggressive in going after mitt romney, perhaps using paul ryan and his budget plan to do that. and paul ryan's going to return the favor and go after barack obama. it is going to be an interesting night here in danville, center college which has hosted these debates before. guys? >> john, we look forward to s

one is lloyd benson against dan quayle and lloyd benson had one of the historic smackdowns of quail. but ryan has an entirely different political persona. he's very much a policy geek, he's very much on top of substance. and so i think that's not going to be easy for biden to do. one analog that might be useful is dick cheney and john edwards in 2004 when john kerry had built momentum against george w. bush and dick cheney sat down with john edwards and kind of portrayed him as a light weight who hasn't been around, who missed a lot of votes. cheney projected some sgchlt ravitas and did george bush a virs. and president obama is hoping joe biden can do that for him tonight. >> i was wondering if you're going to ask that question, are you ready if something god forbid were to happen, a heartbeat away, do you make that point with paul ryan when the republican caricature of biden keeps pointing that out? this guy is heartbeat away from the president? it depends which side of the aisle you're on as to who wins the argument. biden has been around a long time, but you don't need to be -- y

remember, lloyd benson in 1988 against dan quayle said that one line to dan quayle, i knew jack kennedy. jack kennedy was a friend of mine. >> if you're obama, do you attack romney or do you advertise whatever you think your own virtue is? >> every poll that came up this morning, romney sup side down in favorables and that's a bad thing. you don't need to attack hilm. you attack congress for not passing the 28% corporate, and blah, blah, blah. you don't have to now. if romney goes after him, then you rebut that. but if i'm obama, i do not attack him. you're the president of the united states. you're cool, calm, and collected. >> when andrew asked that question -- i also saw it in "the new york times." the debate handler supposedly had to tell the president, please don't be too smart. you're a professor. don't just blow them away with your details, which you could. give me the substancetive argument for president obama on what he's rung on. all i know is he wants to raise taxes on rich people. other than that, what is his substance? >> are you better off than you were four years ago. >>
